Writing Friday #7: Persuasive

Writing Friday #7: Persuasive

In school, there are many rules that I disagree with. One of these rules is tucking your shirt in. For example, when you are running around outside and dive to catch a football, your shirttail may come out. Even though you may not realize that your shirt is out until you look down, the teachers will still get on you about it. I would be willing to bet that teachers have to give at least two detentions a day for kids with their shirts untucked. But sometimes you can't help it. Do you know how easily shirttails come out? It’s like they are soaked in butter. Though it may make us look sloppy, we can't help it if they sometimes come out. Even if it's just for recess, I would like to feel comfortable sometimes.
Another issue I would like to discuss is the colors of polos and turtlenecks. Why do they always have to be white or navy-blue? Quiet honestfully, I thing orange and green polos look just as good. There is nothing that looks particularly sloppy about different colored polos, so why must it always be navy-blue or white.
I think that these changes to the dress code wouldn't play a major role in our school life, just give us more of a variety of styles that we could wear. It wouldn't be like our educational effort would go down because of this. I truly think that it would be easier to concentrate at school everyday with a more lenient dresscode.

In school, there are many unfair rules. One rule I really don’t like is the dress code. There is no reason that you should have to walk around all day with your shirt tucked in. There are several times when your shirt could get un-tucked during the day. Take recess for example. When you are running around outside playing, of course your shirttail is going to come out. You could be lying down all scratched up, and a teacher will give you a detention for an un-tucked shirt. You know how easily shirttails come out right? They are about as slippery as butter on a frying pan. Who are we trying to impress anyway? The only people that come around the school that we would really want to impress are admissions people. They could post admissions people visits on the bulletin.
The school already makes us wear buttoned-down shirts, long khakis, even when it’s really hot out, and ties. Also, the polo shirts have to be white or dark blue. What difference does it make if they are blue or green? Also, I don’t think that the teachers realize how valuable our recess is. We only have fifteen minutes every day to chill out, and sometimes we have to miss it because our shirt is un-tucked. The next time we get to chill out is when school ends. Even then, we only have about thirty minutes before we have to go back into study hall. That makes forty-five minutes of time for yourself everyday. I bet that the teachers hand out several detentions a day because of someone that had their shirt un-tucked. I bet that the teachers get tired of it sometimes too. When you think about, there is only one “reason” that the teachers want us to tuck our shirts in, and that is to have more authority. I mean, isn’t already enough that we have to worry about. School, sports, and every other thing a 12-year old boy has to think about are on our minds 24 hours a day.
